South Carolina farmers could be growing industrial hemp by the end of the year - Cannabis News

COLUMBIA — A bill allowing the growth of industrial hemp has cleared the Senate and is expected to be accepted by the House this week, lining South Carolina farmers up to begin planting the crop before the year is out.

The proposal allows the state to create a pilot program, as approved by a 2014 federal farm bill, so a limited number of S.C. farmers could grow, process and sell hemp.

The bill also allows a college, such as Clemson University, and the S.C. Department of Agriculture to conduct research on any potential benefits for the state in growing and processing hemp.
