Sesh and the City: Does Carrie Bradshaw still want to smoke weed?

Sarah Jessica Parker’s character appears to covet the Genius Mini cannabis pipe that makes two appearances in the first couple episodes of the Sex and the City reboot.

The makers of high-end, sometimes bespoke Genius Pipe for cannabis must have been tickled pink when they noticed that it was on screen for all to see in the Sex and the City reboot, And Just Like That, now airing on HBOMax.

Though the product was not named, the mystery about the origin of the unusual cannabis device has now been solved, according to a press release from Genius, whose pipe is said to offer great taste, fine herb, a unique cooling and filtering functionality and, in step with all things Sex and the City, plenty of style.

No doubt, viewers of the first two episodes of And Just Like That have noticed the weed theme into the new half-hour show, which premiered last week.

In the first episode, Parker’s character, Carrie, can be seen trying to ignore (but perhaps longingly recalling) the Genius Mini as Che, played by Sarah Ramirez, steals a few puffs as the two share an elevator ride.

Carrie’s current smoking status isn’t clear, but one need only think back to the original series to find plenty of love of bud.

After a night gone bust, following Berger’s break-up with her via a Post-it, Carrie is ready to pack things in and go home when Samantha, played by Kim Cattrall, casually slides a joint from inside her dress to save the night.

Carrie responds with a gleeful, “God, I love you. Where did you get that?” while excited hopping up and down. Samantha tells her, “Well, apparently $20 will buy you three drinks, a channel change and a joint.”

After Samantha takes a deep haul and passes off the joint, Carrie takes five or six rapid-fire tokes, adding “men are bull****,” as she holds the smoke for a bit.

As the sesh continues, Carrie looks decidedly more relaxed.

“Wow, this is strong weed,” she says.

There’s also the time Carrie and a young overnighter are lazing on what looks like a rooftop patio completely stoned. With a KFC bucket filled with chicken between her legs, Carrie says, “I’m thirsty,” to which Wade, the comics-shop-clerk living at his parent’s place, responds, “There’s bong water.” Carrie starts laughing and then turns on a nearby hose, presumably to have that drink.

In the new limited series, the second, perhaps less loving, reference to cannabis occurs when Miranda, played by Cynthia Nixon, catches her son enjoying his own sesh with the same Genius pipe.

Alarmed, Brady (Niall Cunningham) drops the pipe to the ground, but the durable unit is none the worse for wear.

It might not be surprising that cannabis use has faded into the everyday norm, what with a Pew poll this past spring indicating that 91 per cent of respondents supported legalizing marijuana for either medical use only (31 per cent) or recreational use (60 per cent). That support was reflected in a Gallup poll last month, with 68 per cent of respondents supporting legalizing cannabis.

Additionally, cannabis is now legal in New York City, where both Sex and the City and And Just Like That are set, and elsewhere in the state.

What did come as more of a surprise, at least to Genius, was that the pipe was featured at all.

“We were just watching the show just as much as everybody else when we found out,” says company CEO Dyan Ferman. “We’re thrilled. But not totally surprised,” Ferman adds, taking the opportunity to cite its style, design and functionality.
