Despite Hurdles the Michigan Cannabis Market Is On Fire

Now well into its second full year of adult-use sales, Michigan’s legal cannabis market is emerging from the pandemic ripe with opportunity. With a run rate behind only California and Colorado, Michigan’s early 2021 sales have put the state on pace to not only break the billion-dollar sales threshold but also blow right past it.

Michigan regulators allowed the state’s dispensaries to continue operating during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 – the first full calendar year of adult-use sales— resulting in sales over $984 million. Despite the essential business provision and solid initial sales, legal cannabis purchases declined during the autumn months.

They probably had some idea, seeing that the state ended the previous fiscal year with more than $317 million in cannabis taxes, according to 23 WIFR.

Cannabis-Growing Gathers Momentum in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe recently scrapped rules requiring sole state ownership for cannabis farming to encourage investment in the plant for industrial and medicinal uses. Zimbabwe is Africa's largest tobacco producer, but authorities expect hemp export earnings to start replacing tobacco as farmers seek higher earnings from the crop.

Farmer Jesper Kirk has been growing mainly tobacco since he moved to a 250-hectare farm five years ago. He now plans to increase his hectarage of hemp, a type of cannabis plant that has very low levels of THC — the intoxicating substance in marijuana — when the growing season begins in a few months.

Cannabis uses a similar amount of water per acre as other agricultural crops in California: Researchers

The work has relied mostly on water use reports from farmers enrolled in California’s cannabis cultivation program, as well as anonymous farmer surveys.

And while the data surrounding cannabis use, especially on nonpermitted grows, remains limited, the Cannabis Research Center is beginning to form a better understanding of how outdoor cultivation impacts local environments.

Illinois legalized adult-use cannabis with the first legal sales beginning in January 2020. The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation reports total sales for May 2021 were nearly $116.4 million. That’s nearly $1.5 million more than was sold in April.

Virginia legalizes cannabis this week, but seeds may be hard to come by

Cannabis will soon be legal to grow in Virginia, but many growers have one question: how will they get their hands on cannabis seeds?

Under Virginia's new cannabis law, residents aged 21 and up, can grow up to four plants per household starting July 1. However, it will still be illegal to buy or sell cannabis seeds in the Commonwealth. It is also a federal crime to transport cannabis or its seeds across state lines.

Earlier this year, when the Virginia General Assembly amended its cannabis bill to move legalization to July 1, 2021, it did not change the legal framework around the sale of cannabis seeds.

Legal cannabis sales still will not begin until 2024.

“It is also being marketed aggressively to kids,” Kaminsky tweeted.
