Legal marijuana supporters to sue Maine’s secretary of state – Marijuana News
PORTLAND, Maine — Supporters of an effort to legalize and regulate marijuana like alcohol in Maine say they plan to sue Maine's secretary of state.
Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap said that of the 99,229 signatures submitted to his office, only 51,543 signatures were those of registered Maine voters.
More than 47,000 signatures were not valid, he said. A citizen's initiative needs 61,123 valid signatures to qualify for the ballot.
Backers of the initiative claim that 17,000 of the signatures were ruled invalid because the signature of a notary did not match that signature the state had on file.
