Hemp Plane Running Off Hemp Fuel A Reality Within A Year

Canadian Derek Kesek is designing what will arguably be the most sustainable plane in the world.

No less than 75% of this aircraft will be constructed with hemp, while the fuel source will consist of hemp bio-fuel. Unless you’ve been living under a rock you probably already know that hemp is the most sustainable and versatile plant known to humans, so it makes sense to use it for air travel.

If all goes to plan, Kesek is set to fly the 4 seater hemp plane this Fall (2015) or next spring (2016) from Kitty Hawk, N.C., site of the Wright Brothers’ historic take off.

Kesek is a former organic restaurant owner and founder of Hempearth, a company created to provide hemp products to the masses.

This plane project is just our first experiment with industrial hemp, and we plan to explore many uses. Once we establish structural testing and information from the hemp project, we will take that and work on the next best implication. The sky may not be the limit. -Kesek

Hemp production is carbon neutral, which means it doesn’t have much (if any) of a negative impact on the Earth. The plant will be used in place of carbon fiber, which is typically used to build planes and other crafts. Fiber glass production isn’t sustainable at all, and creates mass amounts of pollution.

Kesek launched a crowd-sourced funding campaign and says he’s well on his way to reaching the $500,000 required for the project. If you’d like to donate click HERE.

Unlike its sister plant, marijuana, hemp can’t get you high. Smoking hemp would be the equivalent of trying to get drunk from non-alcoholic beer. There are currently 19 states which allow regulated production of industrial hemp, hopefully in the not so distant future every state and country will embrace hemp.
